CUAME Warns Against Reckless Accusations and Prejudice towards PEI Buddhist Community

December 08, 2025

Canadians United Against Modern Exclusion (CUAME) is deeply concerned about the reckless accusations by media, former politicians and so-called national security experts against the Bliss and Wisdom Buddhist community in Prince Edward Island.

While CUAME unequivocally supports adherence to the rule of law in Canada, we are alarmed by the allegations of national security threats from a group of monks and nuns based on ignorance, prejudice and speculation.

The attacks on Bliss and Wisdom are yet another example of "modern exclusion” in Canada, which is a form of discrimination based on foreign interference hysteria and national security overreach. When accusations against minority cultural or religious groups are rooted in assumption rather than evidence, the result is a toxic environment where heritage and faith become grounds for suspicion. This is an unfortunate throwback to the days when religious minorities in Canada such as the Huguenots and Dukhobors were deemed to be threats to society because of what was seen to be their aberrant religious views.

CUAME emphasizes that the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees fundamental freedoms, including freedom of conscience, religion, expression, and association. That Bliss and Wisdom may hold a view of Tibetan Buddhism which is different from other practitioners is hardly a basis on which to treat them as a national security threat.

Fairness requires that public discourse distinguish between proven wrongdoing and speculative fear-mongering. CUAME calls on media outlets, officials, community leaders, and especially the government of PEI, to uphold the rule of law, reject sensationalism, and defend Canadians’ charter rights.
